Just when Republicans were trying to clean up their image when it comes to women’s issues, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee makes a very candid statement, demonizing Democrats and their support of the requirement for contraception to be covered under all health insurance.
During a Republican National Committee meeting, Huckabee made the following remark concerning Democrats, women and contraception.
Women I know are outraged that Democrats think that women are nothing more than helpless and hopeless creatures whose only goal in life is to have the government provide for them birth control medication. Women I know are smart, educated, intelligent, capable of doing anything that anyone else can do. Our party stands for the recognition of the equality of women and the capacity of women. That’s not a war on them — it’s a war for them. And if the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without ‘Uncle Sugar’ and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control, because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it. Let us take that discussion all across America, because women are far more than the Democrats have played them to be. And women across America need to stand up and say, ‘enough of that nonsense.'”~Mike Huckabee
Mike Huckabee did a poor job of expressing his sentiments and women across the country are livid because of his terse words. He compares the government to A Sugar Daddy and attempts to portray Democrats as people who do not have respect for women. In doing so, his comment about women not being able to control their libido comes off as judgmental and rude.
Women have sex. We enjoy it. You don’t have to denigrate us because of it, Mike. We don’t care what you think. You’re ugly and we wouldn’t have sex with you anyway. Your opinion doesn’t even matter. My Savvy Sisters will laugh and keep it moving.
The real issue with the required health coverage for birth control is the fact that some religious organizations do not want to pay the extra premium for the coverage because their religion says that birth control is a sin. Their sentiment is, ‘Why be required to pay for a service we will not use?’
In theory you won’t use it, but in reality the people who work for you will. Just because you’ve made it a moral law not to have pre marital sex or use birth control doesn’t mean someone you know and love won’t break that rule. Consider the nun in El Salvador who just gave birth to a baby last week. She claims she had no idea she was pregnant yet unless there was some form of a miracle, she had to have broken the rules about pre marital sex at least once.
Birth control is a very important option for women who are healthy, love life and want to pursue their dreams. Every woman has a choice whether to use it or not but those who do choose to use it are saying- I love myself and I do not want to interrupt my current path with a child at this time.
Her decision to not have a child when she is not ready is not a spiritual concern, it is a matter of intelligence. We can’t leave it up to chance, if we know we do not want children. We have to prepare and prevent and pretending that we will just stop having sex is silly.
Make a decision. Do you want children right now or not? If you do not want children, please go and use a more consistent form of birth control than condoms. The same way that you applied for college and worked for 4 years to get your degree you can plan to protect this unwanted situation from happening.
Don’t think an unwanted pregnancy can’t happen to you because it can. It happened to me. Afterwards I had to make a grown up decision to prevent it from happening again and I had an IUD inserted.
The government is not being your Sugar Daddy by requiring birth control, it is simply making you more aware of your options. It is providing you with the resources to direct your future in any way you choose. Make your choose and be content with it. No one is judging you. And if Mike Huckabee makes another comment, just laugh, he’s nobody to be too concerned with.
