I didn’t bat an eye at the “racist” part of the whole scandal. Every person has a side to them that makes them undesireable to the masses. As the announcement of Paula Deen’s being fired from Food Network was disseminated, I kept thinking about every great person who has ever done something amazing and was subsequently vilified for their unacceptable behavior or interests.
Like the rise and fall of any empire, it is now Paula Deen’s turn.
My suggestion to anyone seeking their fortune at the hands of popularity or relying on physical strength or beauty: Strive to recognize when you hit your peak. Save as much as you can and have an alternate means of supporting yourself while you reinvent yourself.
Shaquille O’Neal is an excellent example. He knew that he wouldn’t be the darling of basketball forever so while the iron was hot and he was making millions, he earned a PhD and went through training academy to become a police officer.
Life is all about ups and downs. It is the natural flow of life. You WILL fall from your pedestal. Your shine WILL diminish over time to make room for new stars. Be ready to accept it and transform yourself into someone you can still respect outside of the public’s approval.
